A Playlist Profile of Princess Diana
By Jordan Daly
9/12/11
Many people think that being part of a royal family is all glamour and easy going. That was far from true for Princess Diana. She was married at a very young age and devoted her life to working with different charities to make a difference in the world. She was mostly involved in charities dealing with underprivileged children, aids, leprosy, and homeless teens. She also went through many hardships, such as: bulimia, media pressure, and divorce. Even through these hardships she was still able to devote a large amount of her time to people that were less fortunate. She always saw the good in everyone and knew that if everyone were to be more caring and loving the world would be a better place. She used herself as an example and traveled the world to spread this message. Even though her life came to an end when she was 36, she lived long enough to make a huge difference in the world and impact many lives. The fact that she suffered a lot in her life and was still able to change the world and impact so many lives in a positive way makes her a true leader.
Track #1: Good Life
One Republic. “Good Life.” Waking Up. Mosley Music/ Interscope Records, 2011.
Princess Diana was very blessed with the things she was given in life. Having been born with royal blood in her veins, she caught the eye of Prince Charles of Wales and later married him (Princess). She had a huge fairy tale wedding and everyone around the world adored her. Princess Diana was a very beautiful and driven young woman who knew that the world needed her help. Being a princess enabled her to have power, popularity, and money to teach and participate in good works. The lyrics “Oh this has gotta be the good life” reflects the early years of Diana as a princess and how blessed and happy she was being so young and so fortunate.
Track #2: Where is the love?
Black Eyed Peas. “Where is the love?” Elephunk. Interscope Records, 2004.
Princess Diana was very involved in charity work. She used her power and popularity as a princess to help those in need. The lyrics “Children hurt you to hear them crying” refers to why Princess Diana helped the youth. She has a caring heart and knew that something had to be done to help underprivileged and neglected children. The lyrics “Where is the love” also correspond to Diana when she said, “The worst illness of our time is that so many people have to suffer from never being loved (Charity).” She knew the importance of being a loving and caring human being and devoted her life to spreading that message.
Track #3: Seasons of Love
Rent. “Seasons of Love.” Rent (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Warner Bros. Record Inc., 2005.
One of Princess Diana’s main concepts that she wanted to raise money for and spread awareness of was HIV AIDS. She strongly believed that people suffering from aids should be treated with kindness and compassion. She played a key role in changing peoples’ negative viewpoints on people effected by AIDS (Pillai). She was even one of the first people to shake hands with an AIDS victim when they were still unsure of how it was spread. The lyrics “Five Hundred Twenty-Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes, How Do You Measure a Year In The Life?” are referring to how much time someone has left to live when living with AIDS. Diana knew of the struggles that AIDS victims faced and knew that through her support she could get the world to support the AIDS victims rather than neglect them.
Track #4: Corazon Sin Cara
Royce, Prince. “Corazon Sin Cara.” Prince Royce Single. Top Stop Music, 2010.
Being in the public’s eye all the time is a lot of pressure for a young woman. Princess Diana had to deal with the media invading her space every single day. Having been thrown into the spotlight at such a young age put a lot of emotional stress on Diana. Her husband Prince Charles did not help the situation and she often said that he made her feel inadequate in every way (What). She used food as a way to cope with the stress and later became bulimic. The lyrics “And they tell me, You're self conscious of your image
and look at the mirror” show how Diana struggled with self image and never felt good enough for her husband Charles. Even though at first the public was shocked and disapproved by her illness. It later helped girls to have the courage to come forward and confess their eating disorders. Many women felt more comforted knowing that Diana was able to seek treatment and decided to do the same. This became known as the “Diana Effect” (Bulimia). In the end, Diana was able to overcome her illness and used her struggles to educate others on eating disorders and encourage them to seek treatment.
Track #5: Who’s Cheatin Who
Jackson, Allen. “Who’s Cheatin Who.” 34 Number Ones. Sony Music Entertainment, 2010.
Princess Diana’s marriage to Charles was anything but perfect. They grew very distant from one another and began to see less and less of one another. They were two very opposite people and Charles thought Diana was very emotional and attached while Diana thought Charles was insensitive unsupportive (Diana). They lyrics “Who's cheatin' who, who's being true, who don't even care anymore” perfectly describes their marriage. They were both seeing other people and knew that their marriage was beyond the point of repair. They separated in 1992 and even though Diana was not happy in the marriage, she was very upset about the divorce (Princess). Through all of the scandal and struggles of her marriage she still managed to be a great mother to her kids and also stay heavily involved in all of her organizations even after the divorce.
Track #6: I’m Alright
Messina, Jo Dee. “I’m Alright.” I’m Alright. Curb Records Inc., 1998.
Diana had two children by the names of Harry and William. She did everything she could to give them a normal life. She had hired a nanny to watch over them at times, but she made it clear that she did not want the nanny to have a large impact on who her kids were and how they were raised. She may have not have had the easiest life but she always did her best to make sure that she was a dependent and strong mother for them. The lyrics “We lost our minds when things got tough, but
Beatin' time is a losin' fight and I guess I'm doin' alright” reflects Diana’s struggles and barriers that she had to deal with. Even though she had to deal with a lot of extra baggage, she was still able to be there for her kids and support her charities.
Track #7: Concrete Angel
McBride, Martina. “Concrete Angel.” Martina McBride Greatest Hits. Sony Music Entertainment, 2001.
Diana may have been part of many different charities, but she had a special place in her heart when it came to children. When it came to sick and dying kids Diana always put her best effort forward in her charities to raise money and awareness. She traveled all over the world to be around less unfortunate people to try to spread awareness. She was oftentimes photographed holding sick kids with contagious diseases (charitable). The lyrics “Someone cries in the middle of the night, and the neighbors hear but they turn out the light” is exactly what Dianna did not want people to act like. She wanted to people to be in support of others rather than turning their backs when others needed help and comfort.
Track #8: If I Die Young
The Band Perry. “If I Die Young.” The Band Perry. Universal Republic Nashville Records, 2010.
The lyrics “If I Die Young” represent one of the most shocking events in Princess Diana’s life. Princess Diana only lived to the age of 36. On August 31, 1997
she died at 4am due to complications resulting from a car accident. She was traveling through Paris on her way to London when her driver lost control of the
vehicle and ran into a pillar in a tunnel. It was stated that her driver was avoiding
paparazzi and going to fast. Later on they revealed that her driver was under the
influence of alcohol and other drugs (September). The lyrics “The sharp knife of a short life, well I've had just enough time”, describe Diana a lot. She may have had a very unexpected short life, but in her life she was able to accomplish so many things in such a short life.

Many called Diana’s bulimia a “secret disease”. She became bulimic when media put a lot of pressure on her to look good and they had also reportedly called her “pudgy”. She also did not feel accepted by her husband Charles and food was her way to cope with it. When Diana’s illness became public it helped many women to come out of their shell and talk openly about their illnesses. They also were more encouraged so seek treatment since Diana had done so. Many called women opening up and resolving their illness the “Diana effect”.

Diana had been traveling to London and was passing through paris. She was in the back seat of a car driven by her security guard. They were driving through a tunnel in Paris trying to shake off the paparazzi following their Mercedez-Benz. The car spun out of control at the entrance of a tunnel and spun into a pillar and then hit the concrete wall. The two people in the front of the car died on the scene and Diana and her other body guard were critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital. She died four hours later due to complications from the crash. People wonder why the drive spun out of control but it was later stated that the driver had been under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.
